Poppa loved to dance and spent many years swinging his wife around the square dancing floor as a member of several clubs. He had the best fish fries in the family. His grandchildren knew what a softie he was and how to bypass Nana and ask him to a trip to the ice creamery or anything else we wanted. He loved to tell jokes and make people laugh. Melvin had the biggest garden, and his shop was the envy of all men. He fixed all the bikes of the neighborhood and anything else anyone needed. He was a brother and best friend to all who knew him, and he would bend over backwards to help everyone around. He loved the Lord and was a member of First Baptist Church.
He loved life, his wife, all children and experiences that come with life. He also loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, hunting and mostly golf. Melvin made many accomplishments and contributions to his community over the years. He was part of the group that brought deer back to Jackson County and a part of the space program, working with Thiokol and IBM on the Gemini and Apollo missions. He met several presidents and all the Apollo astronauts. He was a Mason for 70 years and helped bring the Cahaba Srhine to Huntsville.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Velma Shepard; brother, Billy (Sissie) Shepard; children, Sue Moore, Gregory (Shelia) Shepard, Mark Shepard; grandchildren, Mechele Mosley, Valorie (Patrick) Barnes, Belinda McMichael, Christopher (Dominique) Shepard, Rebecca (Emory) Winters, Alex (Marian) Shepard, Anna Shepard, Zander Shepard; great-grandchildren, Lauren (Kane) Faulkner, Jamie Mosley, Bailey Barnes, Jake Barnes, Laney McMichael, Evan McMichael, Winston Shepard, Coco Shepard, Charlotte Winters, Nora Winters, Samuel Winters, IV, Archie Shepard; great-great-grandchildren, Layla Faulkner, Lucas Faulkner; several nieces and nephews; all of the Stephens family.
