Mrs. Doris Jean Keel Mitchell, 90 of Grant passed away surrounded by her family at her home on Wednesday night, October 27, 2021.
She was a long-time member of the Simpson Point Church of Christ. Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Kate Duncan Smith DAR High, then went on to study at Snead Junior College and Jacksonville State College. She received her Bachelors of Science in health, physical education and social studies, later pursuing her graduate work in social studies at George Peabody and Alabama A&M University.
Mrs. Mitchell taught in the Talladega County School System, Cullman County, Northeast State Jr. College, and the remainder of her career was spent at New Hope High where she taught for 24 years until her retirement in 1985. She became a member of the Alabama Education Association in 1952 and served as a retired delegate from 1989 – 1994. She became a member of the Alabama Retired Teachers Association in 1985 and attended dozens of district and state workshops, serving as the Vice-Chair of the State Constitution and Future Planning Committee.
Mrs. Mitchell became a member of the Huntsville/Madison County Retired Teachers Association and served as the Membership Chairperson, Community Services Chairperson, Telephone Committee, Constitution Committee and Historian. In 2001, Mrs. Mitchell because a member of the Heroes of Kings Mountain DAR Chapter. She then became a founding member of the Gunter Mountain chapter where she served as the Founding Vice Region.
She is survived by her daughters, Beverly (Gay) Harrison, Sherry (Jim) Knight; son, Greg (Tammy) Mitchell; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Jack Mitchell; parents, Cecil and Velma Keel; brothers, J.C. Keel, C.W. Keel, Charles Keel.
Memorial donations may be made to the Jack and Jean Mitchell Scholarship Fund at New Hope High School in New Hope, Alabama.
