The Blessing Of Motherhood
by Terry Broome
There are not many words that produce the kind of emotion in us as the word “Mother” does. This is no accident as God’s Will has placed mothers in a major role in shaping the character and the spirit of every child. Someone stated well, “The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand the rules the world.”
Can you still hear the voice of your mother in the many things that you do? We certainly should. Solomon reminds us every time we read Proverbs 6:20 – 22 (NKJV) 20) “My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother. 21) Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. 22) When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you.” While our evil society has tried mightily to diminish this role, aren’t you glad that you had a mother who was willing to put your welfare above her own? To a great extent our choice to serve God was greatly influenced by mother.
Today’s idols may be glamour, popularity, prominence in society, or even career over family. However, if our homes and our mothers are what they should be, we can have an influence that society cannot erase. Notice the power of Mother in the instilling of faith in the living God. Paul refers to this in 2 Timothy 1:5 (NKJV) 5) “when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.” This is not an easy process. It takes determination. Many mothers have little support from the fathers here. What a blessing when she succeeds! Proverbs 31:28 – 29 (NKJV) 28) “Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: 29)Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.”
God uses motherhood to describe His love for us – Isaiah 66:13 (NKJV) 13) “As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” Paul draws from a mother’s love in describing his passion for the brethren of Thessalonica: 1 Thessalonians 2:7 – 8 (NKJV) 7) “But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8)So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.”
There is a sense of security and well-being that comes from the care of mother. There is security in knowing there is someone who will care, Proverbs 4:3 (NKJV) 3) “When I was my father’s son, Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother.” This security will be with us all of our lives, in the teaching about everything from school to dating!
Solomon writes in Proverbs 1:8 (NKJV) 8) “My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother;” Mother has the opportunity to introduce you to the issues of life. Each of us should be so thankful that our mother had the time to be there for us, in the many events of life, in the atmosphere within the home, and in giving us support as adults! Proverbs 31:14 – 15 (NKJV) 14) “She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. 15) She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants.” Show love to your Mother while you can. If she’s passed from this life, take time to thank God if you had a Godly, Christian Mother!
