Alabama Arbor Day 2025 was commemorated on February 22nd with a tree seedling giveaway and memorial tree planting earlier in the week co-sponsored by the Scottsboro Tree Commission, the Alabama Urban Forestry Association and the National Arbor Day Foundation.
A Bloodgood Japanese Maple Tree was planted on the grounds of the Scottsboro/Jackson Heritage Center in memory of Joan Marie Raispis. Mrs. Raispis was on the Heritage Center Board of Directors for many years, and was a very deserving choice for this honor.
The Scottsboro Tree Commission would sincerely like to thank all who took part in and attended the tree seedling giveaway at the Veterans Fairgrounds, with special thanks to the VFW for the use of their building. 150 nice people of all ages came by to pick up baby trees that will one day become large trees for future generations.
Many thanks to our Jackson County Foresters for being on hand for our seedling giveaway, and a special debt of gratitude goes to the Jackson County Master Gardeners. Without their kind, generous assistance, we would never be able to have such a successful endeavor each year.
Urban trees have always been a part of the fabric of America. They beautify our communities, cool our homes, increase property values, clean our air, provide oxygen that we breathe, reduce noise, prevent soil erosion and create habitat for birds.
Sincerely,
The Scottsboro Tree Commission
