Scottsboro High School will begin implementation of their recently approved weapons detection screening on Wednesday, March 13. Upon entry to the building, students and guests must now pass through the weapons detection system. The screening process is expected to be similar to those used in stadiums and other public venues. The advanced technology of these systems is designed to minimize disruption.
Earlier this week visitors and students began using the entrance at Scottsboro High School facing John T. Reid Parkway, nearest the rotunda, rather than the rear entrance to the building. Signage has been posted at each entry point of the building.
Heavy police presence is expected during training and implementation of the new weapons detection system.
A recent press release issued by SCS Superintendent Amy Childress stated in part, “The safety and well-being of our students, staff and visitors are our highest priorities. Our goal is to create a learning environment where students, staff and visitors feel safe and supported, and we feel that this initiative aligns with our dedication to proactive safety measures. We understand that school safety is a shared concern, and this decision was made after careful consideration and ongoing collaboration with many safety and security professionals, local law enforcement, school systems who are already using similar systems, and school and district leadership. It is important to note that this decision was NOT a response to a specific threat but a proactive step to help prevent potential dangers on campus.”
