During the recent Jackson County Commission meeting, Commissioners unanimously voted to approve a resolution, at the request of the Jackson County Legislative Delegation, for an increase to Jackson County Probate Judge Victor Manning’s salary. This resolution will now go to the legislative services, who will draft a local law, advertise in local newspapers, and allow citizen comments. Following these steps, the Jackson County Legislative Delegation will determine whether or not to submit the bill for approval.
Commissioners approved the purchase of a boat dock cover and lift for the Jackson County Park. The purchase comes at a cost of $27,192.50.
Commissioners discussed adjusting the county’s fee structure in order to increase revenue. The commission voted to set the rules aside and voted to pass the resolution so that it can reach the Alabama State Legislature during the 2025 session. This adjustment will amend fees for various licenses and recording fees. Chairman Bill Nance stated that the funds will be allocated with 20 percent going toward Jackson County School Resource Officers, 20 percent going to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, 10 percent going to the Jackson County Volunteer Fire Departments, 15 percent for central services and 35 percent going toward local bridge improvements.
Jackson County Park Director Douglas Parrish spoke to commissioners about the park’s needs. Parrish stated that the pavilion at the park currently is in need of roof repair. He said that fencing and walking surfaces were also in need of an upgrade to better assist those with mobility issues.
Upon recommendation by Scottsboro Tree Commission and Forester Lynn Washington, the commission voted to remove an Eastern Red Cedar tree, located on the north side of the Jackson County Square. The tree is in poor health.
Commissioners also approved the purchase of a Caterpillar paver.
