Mayor’s Corner

Scottsboro Mayor Jim McCamy sat down with me last week for a February update. McCamy began by stating, “First, congratulations to the Scottsboro Varsity girls bowling team for their state championship and to the boys wrestling team for their state and individual championships. Also congratulations to the girls basketball team for making the final four, they will play on Wednesday, February 26 at 3:00 p.m. We’re proud of our Scottsboro athletes and what they’ve accomplished. Many more accomplishments are coming. Many students recently placed in the State BETA competition. So, we’re really excited for Scottsboro High School and their students and everything that they’ve accomplished.”

McCamy continued, “We continue working on the hobby lobby project. We will sign the approved documents in the near future for the cooperative district and 772 district. Hobby Lobby is still on target to open by November 2025.

The City of Scottsboro was awarded an A-trip grant for $1.3 million. These funds will be used to realign the intersection near First Southern State Bank and the old Cattle Stampede building so that it will not be offset anymore.

The housing development on Phillips Drive has already gotten the first lots turned over. The Stonebridge development is also continuing to do design work. We expect their drainage projects to begin pretty quickly in that development.

We are continuing to work on our paving plans for this year. We’ve got several that have to be completed and several that will be started. Of course, some of them are already in process now and haven’t been able to get completed because of the weather. It may be in March before they are completed, but the holdup is the cold and wet weather conditions. Edmonds, Talley and Campground Circle will be completed as soon as the weather dries and warms up.

We continue to recruit additional businesses. There is the potential for a strip mall next to Toyota. There are also others who have expressed interest. These include both full service and fast food restaurants. Folks are still looking pretty closely at us. I am hopeful that there will be other businesses that I will be able to announce in the next couple of months,” McCamy concluded.
