Locals come together for hurricane victims

Several local businesses and organizations throughout Scottsboro and Jackson County have been making trips to deliver supplies for victims of Hurricane Helene.
Section Volunteer Fire Department was one of the first to begin taking donations, as Jimmy Jones helped to lead the effort.

During their second trip to North Carolina to deliver supplies they, along with Section Fire Department, Tri Community (Flat Rock) Fire Department, Talley/Lambert Construction, C&C Asphalt and several volunteers, delivered 43 pallets of supplies including water, horse feed, dog food, non perishable food items, paper products, medical supplies, charcoal, paper plates, cups and cutlery, tents, sleeping bags, sports drinks, propane cylinders, kids toys and clothing, coats, hoodies, nursing scrubs, airpacks and bottles, fire helmets, fire gloves, fire vests, nomex hoods and first responder supplies.

All of these items were transported to Cherokee, North Carolina and will be distributed to damaged areas and shelters in the North Carolina area.

Section Volunteer fire Department is still actively taking donations. All donations can be dropped off at 17 Dutton Road in Section, or Complete Care in Scottsboro or Fort Payne. To arrange a pick up or to volunteer please call 256-574-9764.

Items still needed include, lanterns, propane bottles, fire starter, lighters, table top grills, camp heaters, batteries, 5 gallon buckets with lids, charcoal, sleeping bags, tents, blankets, long johns, toboggans, insulated coveralls, winter coats, sweatshirts, hoodies, hand warmer, feet warmers, winter clothing, tarps, plastic sheeting rolls, medical supplies such as bandages, gauze etc., OTC medication, baby food, baby formula, hygiene products, non perishable food, and both baby and adult diapers.

Scottsboro Police Department recently dropped off supplies from their donation drive in Forest City, North Carolina. Six officers, pastors from the Well Worship Center and a retired ADEM engineer made the trip. Many of the supplies donated will be transported to Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, areas both devastated by Helene. Four trailers, and a large U-Haul were all filled with donations.

At least 227 people have died and hundreds remain missing across six states following Hurricane Helene.
