Thomas Joseph “T.J.” Perry, age 39 of Skyline, passed away on September 8, 2024. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 19, 2024 from the Scottsboro Funeral Home Chapel. Robi Cocker officiated. Interment followed in the Prince Cemetery.
T.J. was a beloved basketball player, coach and mentor who left an incredible mark on the world and whose influence will carry on for generations to come. T.J. was best known for his perseverance on the court and compassion off of the court. He dedicated his life to teaching, guiding and inspiring athletes, students and communities across the State of Alabama.
T.J. coached multiple high school teams across his impressive twelve year coaching career. He has recently began assisting at Samford University. His teams won numerous championships, but more importantly, he helped to shape young men and women into strong, principled individuals. Many of his former players went on to have successful careers in sports, education, business and beyond, crediting him for teaching them not only the game of basketball, but the values of determination, teamwork and integrity.
T.J.’s impact extended far beyond the gymnasium, as he was also known for his tireless involvement in the community, mentoring and advocating for youth programs and often organizing basketball camps for children. He had a gift for recognizing the potential in others and helping them to realize their own strength. His larger than life presence, infectious enthusiasm and hilarious sense of humor made him beloved to students, colleagues and families.
Although he was known for his competitive spirit, T.J. was a deeply compassionate man, always ready with a kind word or a listening ear. He had a huge heart and loved his friends and family beyond imagination. He was a firm believer in God and second chances. He was relentless in his support of those who needed guidance and a helping hand.
T.J. is survived by his parents, Nancy Prince and Tommy Perry; sister, Darcy Perry; niece, Adasah; granny, Doris Prince; as well as numerous other family members, friends and players.
T.J. was preceded in death by his grandparents, Darsie Prince and Joe (Betty) Perry.
