Love shouldn’t hurt

Journey of Healing
by Teresia Smith

Embarking on a journey of healing after sexual assault can be daunting, but it is also a courageous act that displays fortitude and bravery. Unpredictable emotions linger after an assault and can make a survivor feel like their life is out of their control. Upsetting thoughts and flashback memories may make it hard to maintain focus or to have any inner peace. By choosing to work on your healing, you are choosing to reclaim your life and not let the abuser win.
Sexual assault comes in many forms; however, every form of sexual assault causes trauma. Trauma overwhelms your system and leaves a trail of fear and anxiety. Symptoms of trauma can last for years, which is why some adults who were abused as children still suffer long into adulthood. However, the good news is that healing is possible and it’s never too late to begin.

Some trauma symptoms to look for are things such as heightened startle response, feeling on edge all the time, racing heart, quick to anger, difficulty sleeping, and engaging in risky behaviors. These are all signs of hyperarousal. There may also be intrusive distressing thoughts, easily emotionally triggered, flashbacks, and nightmares as you mentally reexperience the trauma.

A survivor may try to avoid trauma reminders. This may look like avoiding certain people or places related to the event. It could also be using drugs or alcohol to suppress uncomfortable thoughts. All of these things are trauma responses and can lead to mental and physical health issues if not addressed. And unaddressed trauma can also lead to broken and difficult relationships throughout adulthood.
If you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault trauma, first you need to know that you are not to blame. You are a survivor who was probably threatened, manipulated, or coerced into sexual abuse. Often the abuser is someone who claimed to love you so that adds another layer of betrayal. Whether you were abused as a child years ago, or as an adult, working to feel safe again is a priority. This is a journey that takes time and will more than likely not be a linear path. There will be twists and turns, and breakthroughs and setbacks. Having a trusted support system around you will be invaluable and we are here to help.
