Best Spring Fishing Techniques
by Mike Gerry
There is no doubt that spring is an exciting time of year for bass fishing. It’s a time where you can utilize many different techniques depending on the phase bass are in when you get on the water. Right now, in Guntersville we are approaching the post spawn and have fish in many phases of spring fishing.
The spawn on any lake lasts about a month to 6 weeks with bass moving up in phases depending on the weather just about on a daily basis. The cold pushes them off the bed, the warming of the sun and moon pushes them back on the bed.
As water temperatures increases an effective technique is using shallow water fishing tactics, moving baits like small crank baits or spinner baits over the tops of the edges of the spawning grounds makes it an easy bait to fish and causes aggressive fish to strike your moving baits.
Looking for lay-downs, riprap on banks like fallen trees or rock with hard bottom areas for the spawning fish to move into are key high-performing locations for spring bass.
Soft plastic baits around the edges and corners or drops in the fallen tree areas are ideal locations for fish to feed. Don’t underestimate the importance of water temperature, if you pull up to a lay down and see an increase in water temperature its an ideal spot to find aggressive fish. It doesn’t take much of an increase to improve one area over the other, just a couple of degrees will do it.
Be creative with your bait, change retrieval speeds, stop and drop your bait, snap or stroke a jig or a worm to cause a reaction. Be jerky with your moving baits, use your wrist to make directional changes, the bottom structure is an ideal way to get your bait to rick-a-shay off the bottom and cause a directional change and hence cause a strike. Creativity with your bait is key, it will bring you to the next level and help you create bites and that is the key to bass fishing!
