Funeral services for Dr. Edwin Kent Horner, born in Talbot, Tennessee on Sunday, November 15, 1936 to James and Gladys Horner, were held on Friday, March 31, 2023 at Scottsboro Funeral Home with Matt Helms officiating. Burial followed in Pinehaven Memorial Gardens.
Dr. Horner attended Jefferson County public schools and graduated from Jefferson High in 1955. Following work with Magnavox Company and service in the United States Air Force, he earned a BS in Biological Sciences from Carson-Newman College in 1964. Two years later, he earned a Master of Combined Science from the University of Mississippi. Since then, he has been employed by Northeast Alabama Community College and was given a leave of absence for a year in 1970 to pursue a doctorate in botany at Auburn University. He married Louise in 1960, and together they had two daughters.
Dr. Horner was the Dean of Students at Northeast Alabama Community College for 33 years before retiring. He was an avid reader and author of four books. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. he wrote for several outdoor hunting and fishing magazines over the years and loved the tranquility of nature. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. He read his bible daily in four languages and sought comfort in the scriptures.
He is survived by his daughter, Romy (Rick) Rorex; grandson, Nicholas (Kyleigh) Rorex; great-grandchild due in September; twin sisters, Jane Bohannon, Jean Sterling. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Horner; daughter, Patra Reece.
