Journey of Healing

Embarking on a journey of healing after sexual assault can be daunting, but it is also a courageous act that displays fortitude and bravery. Unpredictable emotions linger after an assault and can make a survivor feel like their life is out of their control. Upsetting thoughts and flashback memories may make it hard to maintain focus or to have any inner peace. By choosing to work on your healing, you are choosing to reclaim your life and not let the abuser win.

Grace and Peace

When was the last time you stopped and looked at the moon? For me, it was last night. My almost two year old niece is fascinated by the moon. Every night we go to the laundry room window and gaze up at the sky. She tells me that the moon is yellow, and I’ll sing a song while we watch. Then, we say, “Night, night moon” and go back to playing or reading.

Subtle Abuse Behaviors

Do you think you can always tell if someone is being abused? It’s easier to see abuse if someone is yelling at their partner and threatening to harm them, or possibly throwing things across a room, pushing them into a wall while calling them belittling names. Those are all clear signs that abuse is happening. But what about the more subtle abusive behaviors? Often a victim struggles to identify the abuse, doubting their perceptions.

The Church, Part 3

The last two weeks I have tried to explain what being the “the church of God” means. I used the analogy of buildings to help us see that sometimes we carry the attitude of ownership into God’s church. Another useful analogy would be that of an event planner or organizer. From fundraisers to social events, we all enjoy interesting speakers, fun entertainment, cool music, and great friends. Scottsboro certainly has its share of talented event planners and fun events. But hopefully, those do not share the same goals of the church. Remember the church is His, and it should be a reflection of who He is and His glory – not who we are and what our culture is becoming.
