Seeking wisdom

They say that wisdom comes with age, and passed down wisdom sayings are supposed to give you better judgment. We could all use a little more wisdom to help us make it through life, but are they all really wise? I think most parents or grandparents are remembered for saying something frequently enough that it is remembered by their children. What are some old sayings you have heard over the years that are meant to impart wisdom but when truly examined, you find they are not always true? Examples are such as “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” or “kids will be kids”. There are many more to choose from like “the grass is always greener on the other side”, “absence makes the heart grow fonder”. Though meant to impart some wisdom lesson, some of these sayings are just not helpful. Let’s look at a few.

America, God Shed His Grace On Thee”

In 1991, Carla Rohlfing wrote an article for Family Circle magazine (4/23/91, p. 24) in which she affirmed that “The newest ‘virus’ to sweep the nation has nothing to do with getting sick in the traditional sense. According to leading psychologists, Americans are suffering from an unprecedented ‘uncertainty syndrome,’ hallmarked by chronic, even crippling anxiety that threatens to have a strong–and negative effect on our family relationships.” Mrs. Rohlfing went on to blame the Persian Gulf War (our first invasion of Iraq after their attack on Kuwait) under President George H. W. Bush, along with the continuing recession, rising crime rate and other events of that decade. She observed: “What makes our current situation so critical is that as an individual, you have little, if any, power over events that could have a strong impact on your family–from further job cutbacks to the slump in real-estate values.”
