SBOE discusses superintendent search

The Scottsboro Board of Education held a special called work session prior to their regular meeting last week. During the work session board members discussed the superintendent search process as well as the search for an interim superintendent.

Board President Hollie Thompson began the conversation by discussing the search process including the requirements and base salary to be offered. The job will be posted for approximately 30 days, following the job posting, members will choose qualified applicants to move farther in the interviewing and hiring process. Board members hope to post the job around May 16 for at least 30 days. The superintendent salary will range from $125,000 to $135,000 per year. According to Thompson the average salary for a superintendent in similar sized school districts is $131,000.

Thompson stated that her hope is to have a superintendent hired by the middle of August.

Thompson stated that she personally felt that the members should use the board attorney to assist them in the hiring process. The board attorney does not charge a flat rate, but an hourly fee of $185 per hour. Board member Julie Gentry requested that the applications be housed in town. Gentry explained that her concern is that if the application are housed at the attorney’s office, located in Huntsville, it would limit the members on the amount of times they can review the applications. Board member John Esslinger suggested that the applications be brought to the board one time by the attorney and if the board needs to further review, members can go to the attorney’s office to review. Thompson explained that no local attorneys represent the Scottsboro City Board of Education.

Thompson addressed the Interim Superintendent position. Thompson explained that the position did not have to be posted or interviewed for. The person who is chosen as interim is disqualified from applying for Superintendent. The board chose to accept letters of interest internally for the position for approximately seven days.

During the Scottsboro Board of Education meeting, board members approved several personnel items including the recommendation of Corky Hood as principal at Caldwell Elementary School.

The board will meet regarding the superintendent search again on May 15 at 4 p.m.
