Love should never hurt- ever! 03-22-17

Technology and our kids

I don’t know how tech savvy you are, but I thought I knew a lot about technology. However, I’m just beginning to realize how much technology is out there that most of us “older” folks aren’t even vaguely aware of. The recent news about teens “dating” older adults made me wonder about apps that might make these “hook ups” easy to arrange. My research discovered quite a few that gave me the shivers- How many of these do you know about? This list was compiled with the help of local teens—just sayin’

KIK- a free messaging app for smartphones. According to cybercivics.com, users simply login, pick a user name and then send texts, selfies and emojis to friends and strangers. There are internal apps in KIK such as “Flirt” which provides a list of users in your age range to flirt with and “Match & Chat, a Tinder for KIK that lets users swipe left or right on users and chat with the people who swipe right on them too. All of this is free and is apparently very popular with 40% of U.S. teens. Minimum age of use is 13. Don’t know about you but that’s scary to me!

The KIK website says: Kik lets you connect with friends, groups, and the world around you through chat. And now, you can chat with bots too.

Tinder—If you really want to get scared about what’s out there for kids to hook up- Google search the Tinder website/app. Ewe.

Musical.ly- Kind of a combination Karaoke and music videos, “Musers” build a following on Musical.ly among friends (and sometimes strangers) and share posts publicly. It is very easy for young kids to sign up, (as young as 6) and use this very popular app. They can publicly share their sexy lip-synching videos with friends and complete strangers. The site says all users must be at least age 13. Really?

Blendr, Find nearby dates with Blendr, the free, socially flirtatious chat-to-meet app. Blendr uses your Android’s location services to connect you with the fun singles closest to you who share your interests and want to chat it up! The website quickly changes to Flirt.com. The drop- down age choice begins at 18, but matches quickly show up with “naughty” photos of persons much older.

Down- Formerly known as Bang With Friends- “A sexy new design that makes it fun and easy to get dates or get down- whenever- wherever.”

Plenty of Fish- The POF Dating App has the most free features to help you start dating! Must be 17 to register. Yeah, right. Whatssap- More than 1 billion people in over 180 countries use this app to stay in touch. This free app uses the Internet to send messages, images, audio and video to anywhere in the world.

Zoosk- an online dating service available in 25 languages and in more than 80 countries.Imagine the possibilities of a sexual predator here.

As you can see from this partial list, there are lots of lures out there to reel in innocent teens. If any of this worries you, please talk to your teens about online safety. I will have Part 2 next week. In the meantime, a great website for parents to get up to date information about cyber safety is commonsensemedia.org or please feel free to contact me at Crisis Services 256.574.5826 This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
