Following the vote to close Paint Rock Valley High School last week, several personnel items were approved by the Jackson County Board of Education.

The following non renewals were approved: Loren Machen, Crissen Light from Bridgeport Middle School; Sheree Farmer from Bryant School; Samantha Carson from Dutton School; Jessica Owens from Flat Rock School; Jesse McCutchen and Jodi Wright from Hollywood School; Nakesha Fergerson, Bryan Massey and Tonya Taber from North Jackson High School;  Heather Johnson, Christopher Webber from Paint Rock Valley School; Alison Gilbert from Pisgah School; Taylor Finch, Tonya Gowers from Section High School; Amy Hardin from Skyline High School; Stephanie Laney, Jamie Whitley  from Stevenson Middle School; Leigh King, Robert King, Marley Barkley, Caitlin Harnen from Woodville High School; Eric Ott and Steffany Grajeda from EPCOT. Board member Charles West voted no on all non renewals. Board member Cecil Gant asked if any of these employees had volunteered to be non-renewed. Superintendent Kevin Dukes responded “no.” West asked if these were recommended by the Principal. Dukes advised that some were Principal recommendations and some were not. He further explained that there are some schools losing units that have no non-tenured people and these people will have to be moved to the non-tenured positions.
West questioned why the LEA report showed that Woodville school lost one unit and there were four pink slips recommended. Dukes explained that it was a combination of Federal monies along with other monies. The LEA report only listed state allocations. West asked which of the four from Woodville were federally funded. It was explained that Jackson County has class-size reduction units throughout the county and these units should not be placed until school begins to determine the most need. Dukes stated that any board member is more than welcome to come to the office and ask questions regarding the agenda, as they receive it 48 hours prior to the meeting, instead of making a spectacle in front of an audience.
Following the meeting, Duke’s explained that no further personnel would be pink slipped, even though Paint Rock Valley is closing. All tenured teachers will be placed at either Woodville or Skyline.
