Larry Becker, VFW member spoke to the Jackson County Commission last week.

Becker explained that the  Post owns 16 acres of property they wish to turn into a shooting range. Becker requested that the county assist the VFW with the project. County Attorney John Porter explained that prior to this occurring, the County would have to determine that the project would promote public interest.
A motion to approve the department head’s recommendation for the vacant bus driver position with the Council on Aging was approved; A motion to approve the updated job description for the EMA Director was approved; A motion to approve that the county attorney draw up a contract changing the HR clerk from a temporary employee to a contract employee was approved.
A motion to approve changing the commission meetings to 5 p.m. was tabled. Discussion of the County Road 92 bridge replacement was also tabled.
Garry Morgan addressed the Commission regarding Biosolids  created at the Moccasin Bend Wastewater Treatment Plant and dumped on Sand Mountain. According to Morgan,  testing by ADEM in April and May  2017 of water in the area of North Sand Mountain demonstrated increased levels of e. coli, low oxygen content of water, dangerous levels of “oxygen demand” indicating organic pollutants present, Nitrogen Ammonia highly elevated, total phosphorus elevated.
“The problem with ADEM appears to be timely and continuous follow-up testing of water in the areas of pollution. NCI Cancer Stats for the State of Alabama list Jackson County  as number one for Thyroid cancer incidence for all sexes, age under 50, number three incidence rate for all ages; Number two for Pancreatic cancer incidents for males all ages, number six death rate for men; Number two for ovarian cancer deaths (females) all ages. Number six for  non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma incidence all ages female; Number two for liver cancer deaths, male all ages; Number four for Leukemia deaths, males all ages; Number two for  Kidney, pelvic, renal cancer incidence, female, all ages; Number three for colon and rectal cancer deaths female all ages; Number nine for death rate for both sexes; Number one for  brain cancer deaths males, all ages; Number four for  bladder cancer deaths, both sexes all ages,” Morgan said.
