The unfathomable love of Christ
Divine love refers to Christ’s love as well as God’s. Notice this beautiful and meaningful prayer offered by the Apostle Paul on behalf of Gentiles who were brought into relationship with God: Ephesians 3:14-19 (KJV)

“ 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
Paul says of Christ’s love that it is immeasurable, it is unfathomable, it passeth all knowledge and all understanding (v. 19). Yet he prays that we may be able to “comprehend the breadth, length, depth, and height,” (v. 18) and that we may “know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge,” (v. 19). How do we know something that surpasses knowledge? The kind of love that Paul is speaking of here is not a thing that a man might study academically and know all about. It surpasses knowledge. It surpasses understanding. It defies human logic. You can’t put it in a test-tube and measure it or weigh it, or say it has certain chemical properties, and has thus and so chemical reactions. It’s not discovered academically nor scientifically; it doesn’t have density or mass or weight scientifically.
He says it “passeth knowledge” (v. 19) but his prayer is “That we may be able to comprehend [apprehend; grasp; attain to an understanding] with all saints” [Ephesians 3:18]. That is to say, what they know, what they have felt, what they have seen, we might know with them. How? By experiencing it! Then He Speaks of the Four Dimensions of this Experiential Love of God in Christ Jesus: We are made able to understand with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge. (Ephesians 3:18-19).
What is the Breadth of the love of God? It can be seen in that it reaches to men of every race and rank, class and clime, tribe and tongue. Hebrews 2:9 (KJV) “9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.”
What is the Length of the love of God? This can be seen in that it reaches from age to age and from everlasting to everlasting, never putting down a work until it can truthfully be said, “It Is Finished.” To Israel, Jeremiah 31:3 (KJV) “3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love...”
What is the Depth of God’s love? Depth can be seen in that it reaches down to men in the lowest abyss of guilt. 1 Timothy 1:12-13(KJV) “12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; 13 Who was before a BLASPHEMER, and a PERSECUTOR, and INJURIOUS: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.”
And the Height of God’s love can be seen in the position of exaltation and supremacy to which His love exalts us all. He raises us to sit in heavenly places (Eph. 2:4-6).
