God’s vision for the Church
Every church should have “vision.” The important thing is to make sure that our vision for the church corresponds to God’s vision.

God wanted Israel to know that He had vision and plans for them, just as He does for us today! Jeremiah 29:11-12 (NIV) ¹¹“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. ¹²Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.’” Unfortunately, much of Israel’s vision for themselves did not line up with God’s.
Also, unfortunately, man-made visions have over the centuries resulted in man-made churches. Paul speaks to this matter under inspiration of the Holy Spirit in Colossians 2:8 (KJV) ⁸ “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Too often man’s vision of what the church should be has differed from God’s. Some have more of a political or social agenda. Others put their emphasis on entertainment, recreation, worldly concerns, and materialism. Sadly, in some cases, man’s vision for the church is to establish an exclusive social club that shuns outsiders, the poor, or even different races.
Whenever people follow man’s vision instead of God’s, the church becomes something other than what the Lord intended. Remember Jesus’ own words in Matthew 15:13-14 (KJV) ¹³ “But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. ¹⁴Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”
We must commit ourselves to God’s vision for the church. Solomon wrote in Proverbs 29:18, (KJV) ¹⁸“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” That’s the real key. We must honor and keep the law of God for the church to be what God intended for her to be. Too often, churches follow opinions or ideas of men (e.g. best-selling authors, church seminars) and cast off the restraint of God’s word. A church will be blessed only if she keeps God’s vision in full view (i.e. God’s revelation or Word). Sowing only “the seed” which is the Word of God will result in genuine Christianity (Luke 8:11).
Too often, many who are lacking patience give up on God’s vision and turn to man’s vision or ideas to “speed up the process” of success. If we put our faith in God and the power of His gospel and stick with God’s plan, in due season we will see it work in us! 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NKJV) ¹³“For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.”
Let us trust in God’s vision for the Church. In everything we do as a church, let us follow His direction and trust in Him! (Prov. 3:5-6; 16:3). Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV) ⁵“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. ⁶In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
