Oh good grief! There are just a few days before Thanksgiving and a few weeks before Christmas!

! How is that possible? Wasn’t it summer just last week?
I don’t know about you, but I used to love the holidays as a child, but now… well not so much.  I understand now why my parents and grandparents used to roll their eyes as my brother and I excitedly planned our time off from school and put in our requests for our favorite holiday foods.
This year, my precious daughter and I have decided to be realistic about what we can and can’t do for the holidays—not allowing ourselves to become stressed about anything and everything.  We plan to enjoy the holidays together as an intact family!
I want to share our plans- I hope our ideas inspire your family as well.
If (like in our family) someone close to you has recently died or you can’t be with loved ones, realize that it’s normal to feel sadness and grief. We have already acknowledged that this first Christmas without him will be difficult and that tears will flow.
In the past we have focused on equality in gifts. This year, my granddaughter is going to choose gifts for children who may not have any gifts under the tree. She is looking forward to our shopping expedition and the wrapping of gifts afterwards. We know she is making memories that she will always remember and cherish. Hopefully she  will continue to do this for the rest of her life.
We have agreed that our goal is to make the holidays fun, not perfect! Our gifts will be personal, not expensive (aka—within a strict, mutually agreed upon budget).
Our holiday meals will be traditional (for our family) and planned ahead to be sure we have all the ingredients we need for our favorites. We have also promised that our holiday meals will be yummy (especially Thanksgiving), but won’t become Eat-a-Thons!
This year, I want add some new adventures to our usual football/couch potato, TV obsessed  holiday events. Perhaps going stargazing? Let your imagination go wild with possibilities!
No matter what you decide, please take the time to enjoy your loved ones. Life is unpredictable and tomorrow is not promised.
