October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year’s theme is “Voices Rising.”

To promote awareness in Jackson County, we have scheduled several events. Crisis Services of North Alabama Jackson County Office will have a booth at Dutton Town Hall’s “Night Out” on October 2nd from 5-7p.m. We will also be putting up an awareness display at Scottsboro City Hall, Hollywood Town Hall, Stevenson City Hall, Bridgeport Town Hall, Woodville Town Hall, and Skyline Town Hall. The displays will be up for most of October. Please go by and take a look at these t-shirts that have been decorated by adult and child survivors of domestic violence!
The Jackson County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (JCCADV) will be having a balloon release on October 9th at 11:30 a.m. in the Wal-Mart parking lot. In honor and remembrance of domestic violence victims, JCCADV will also hold a Candlelight Vigil on October 16th at 6 p.m. in the Downtown Square Gazebo. Both of these events are open to all who want to show support and help spread awareness.
JCCADV meets the second Thursday of every month at Carlisle’s Restaurant at 12 noon. The coalition works together to help raise awareness regarding domestic violence and sexual assault here in Jackson County. Members come from the judicial system, law enforcement, healthcare agencies, mental health providers, social services, and many other backgrounds. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the needs of victims and survivors in our community is welcome to attend these meetings. We work towards ensuring that as many organizations as possible have representatives at the coalition meetings to share resources for survivors.
Voices Rising follows the #MeToo movement’s urge to stop silencing survivors about their abuse. It encourages everyone to speak up and speak out regarding domestic violence. This is something that affects everyone. Whether you have experienced domestic violence in your home or not it affects you. Voices Rising calls out for bystander intervention. It urges everyone to take notice of your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. If you see something say something.
As a domestic violence victim advocate, we ask that everyone show support to our local survivors by participating in some way. If you cannot attend one of our local events please take a moment to visit one of the many awareness displays set up all across our county. We want these displays to be the silent witness urging people to stop the violence by speaking out. Please feel free to take pictures and share with family and friends through social media. If you do share these photos we encourage you to use some of the following: #VoicesRising2018, #DVAM2018, #SpeakUp, #SpeakOut.
If you or anyone you know have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault, Crisis Services of North Alabama Jackson County provides free, confidential support. Please contact us locally at 256-574-5826 or at our 24 hour 256-716-1000. You do not have to face it alone.
