Part I

I’m going through all my files and doing some big time discarding after I’ve made sure I don’t need it and I ran across something my mother wrote a long time ago. She always found something to do to entertain herself as she got older so she got pretty proficient with that old portable typewriter and wrote poetry almost daily. I never paid a lot of attention to what she was writing as long as it made her happy but this time one was special to me and I want to share it with you:
She titled it, “My Key To Success.”
“Is to put Christ first in your life always. The scripture says, ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness and all things shall be added to you. Matt. 6-33.
“Put Christ first in your life. Obey the Gospel, give yourself to Christ first of all. Then live a faithful Christian life.
“Everything that’s being taught today on Christian living is not a ‘thus saith the Lord.’ For this reason, men are confused and frustrated and may never be saved.
“The Bible says ‘they searched the scripture daily, to see if those things were true.’ Acts 17-11.
“Many people say, ‘I think, I feel or my idea is,’ when they should be saying, ‘The scripture says so and so.’ It doesn’t matter what we may think about it, if it isn’t a ‘thus saith the Lord,’ we’d better leave it alone and read the Bible to see what it says about it. Whatever it says about it, is true.
“Some may say, ‘What is putting Christ first?’ Putting Christ first is doing the things that Christ would have us do before doing the things we want to do even if it’s alright.
“If you went to a ball game or fishing on Sunday afternoon, did you go to worship Sunday morning or read from God’s Holy Word? If your old mother and Dad or grandparents are in need of things, did you take care of that before going out and spending a lot of money on clean fun and luxury, which is alright, just take care of first things first. Christ said, ‘When you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters you were doing it to me.’
“If we put Christ first in our lives He will provide a way for us. He wants us to be successful but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to work. Christ worked when He was here on earth. He worked as a carpenter with His father, Joseph.
“The Bible says a man that won’t provide for his own house has denied the faith and is worse than an infidel. I Timothy 5-8.”
When I read this, probably for the first time for I have dozens of her writings, I only then realized the influence my mother had on me. I wish I had appreciated her more when she was living. She was Alma (Lindsay) Paradise and was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
