Veterans Helping Veterans is a local group of veterans who have served their country and want to give back to their community by serving other veterans in need.

You do not have to be a member of any organization or have any trade experience, just a desire to help other veterans who have become disabled or have health or financial issues. There is a job for everyone no matter what your age or skill level, and they wish to reach out to the younger generations in this area who wish to get involved in their communities and form relationships with the previous generations and members of this community. If you want to become a part of this outreach for veterans in need or wish to make a donation to fund veteran benevolence activities, please call Jim Blackburn at 256-244-4476.
The local VFW, American Legion and their spouses and family members are very involved in community activities. Some of the current activities are building the Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County, working with the schools to provide scholarships and awards, honoring teachers, police officers, firemen, scouts or EMTs at annual award ceremonies, visiting veterans in hospitals and nursing homes and helping veterans and their widows obtain Veteran Administration benefits. They also perform military ceremonies for the folding and presentation of the American flag at the funerals of deceased veterans.
If you are a veteran or the spouse of a veteran and would like to become active in giving back to your community, call Sam Mash with the American Legion Post 30 at 256-609-8211, or Nate Green with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6073 at 256-244-2754. The American Legion and Veterans work together as a team. If you would like to help with the completion of the Veterans Memorial Park of Jackson County, either through a donation, purchase of a paver brick or bench or by volunteering your labor (everyone is welcome), please call Larry Becker at 256-656-9824, or Jim Olyniec at 256-599-3457.
